Synopsis：
The story begins from an odd wedding in Ming dynasty. It takes place in JiangNan, which has beautiful scenery. Meng Li-jun, the girl with matchless beauty is the daughter of a celebrated scholar. She is about to marry Liu Kuibi, a son of Liu Jie, who is an eminent relative of an imperial family. Usually, it’s the happiest moment for the bride. However, Lijun is wearing a plain mourning dress with face full of tears. What has happened…
Trace back the story to one year ago, the bright girl, Li-jun met a son of the Governor, called Huang-fu Shao-hua. at the side of a beautiful brook. They made their love promise under the sky of a starry night. Nevertheless, they were involved in a serious scheme. Liu Jie, the guileful and greedy brother of the queen, forms treacherous collusion, smuggles and illegally sells salt. Because of this, he deliberately pitted the Meng family and the Huang-fu family against each other. Meanwhile, Liu Kui-bi fell in love with Li-jun, who is also the lover of his best friend, Shao-hua. Hence, a martial arts contest was held between the two men caused hostility in their friendship. Subsequently, Liu Jie was promoted to take advantage of the power of her sister as being the queen; he framed Huang-fu family for betraying their country. Therefore, the property of Huang-fu family was confiscated; the entire family was exterminated. As a result, Shao-hua had to flee with the accusation of betrayal; meanwhile and Li-jun was forced to marry Liu Kui-bi.
Since Meng Lijun doesn’t love Liu Bikui at all, she schemes a plan to make Ying-xue who really loves Bikui step on the wedding ship instead. Unexpectedly, Ying-xue tries to stab Liu Jie to death for Li-jun’s misery. The failed assassination causes Liu Jie’s revenge on Meng’s family. Consequently, Li-jun’s parents are exiled to a remote island; fortunately Li-jun escapes. Carrying the task of regaining innocence, Li-jun has to depart to the capital alone. In the course of her escape, she experiences various hardships, such as separation with her lover, the death of friends, being confined in a brothel and escape from a conflagration. When she was about to give up life, an odd elderly doctor Kang appeared and saves her. His fatherly care makes Li-jun mature and persevere. She decides to enter into politics in order to be a righteous official and punish all malfeasants. With the assistance of doctor Kang, Meng Li-jun dresses up as a man and takes the imperial examination, and become the Number One Scholar. However, she fails to prevent the tragic death of doctor Kang.
After experiencing the dramatic shifts between sorrows and joys, Meng Li-jun becomes more mature than before. She has left her naïvity, and enters the adult world where each person tries to cheat the other. Though constantly being persecuted by her enemy Liu Jie, she never gives up. Fortunately, her loyal friends, Liang Xiang and Su Ying-xue are still there to help LiJun to survive politically. LiJun now is growing up step by step in the struggle.
At the same time, Huang-fu Shao-hua encounters similar tough experiences as an inferior border patrol soldier and disguises his real identity during the escape. Moreover, he is on the spot when his captured father commits suicide by jumping down from the city tower for the sake of saving his integrity. Subsequently, Shao-hua returns to the capital full of grief but surprising, he is reunited with Li-jun. Then, they work together facing hazardous difficulties, even death. Finally, they recover their father’s reputation and punished Liu Jie ferociously for his countless crimes. When Shao-hua regains his peace of mind, the only thing he wants to do is to return to serenity with his Li-jun. However, at present, Li-jun has been a major minister with enormous power and the mission committed by dying chancellors. Thus, she has a completely different perspective with Shao-hua. At that situation, Shao-hua is gradually moved by the thoughtful and tender care of Liu Yan-yu. Coincidently, the emperor figures out the startling secret that Meng Li-jun is actually a lady ;he is also deeply attracted by her outstanding presence. At one night, the emperor disregards heavy rain and even sets his dignity aside to dress up as a eunuch to visit Li-jun’s mansion and confide in her.
Facing to Shao-hua’s unswerving affection, unstable political situation and the emperor's warm expectation, Li-jun is involved in the considerable hesitation. Accordingly, Li-jun decides to reveal the fact of her real gender in front of officials at the golden palace. Even though the act may boldly defy the public and incur self-punishment for emperor’s forgiveness, she would like to follow the real inner voice from her heart.
Finally, Li-jun and Shao-hua get together. With sweet melodies soaring over the lakes, they gradually disappear in the romantic scene of endless water lilies…
