In a hunting, the young Confucius saved the greedy and mischievous Pixiu. After recovering from his wound, Pixiu, as advised Lanhua (also saved by Confucius), did not return to the forest but instead followed Confucius in the hope of becoming a beloved lucky animal of the people with the help of Confucius. In the years thereafter, he witnessed Confucius’s experiences of studying hard, giving lectures, engaging in politics, and writing books in frustrations. Pixiu thought of giving up becoming lucky animal for several times, but finally he changed his mind because he was touched by the hard life and benevolent deeds of Confucius, For example, during his childhood, Confucius lived a simple life by studying while herding sheep but he had great ambitions; after his mother passed away, Confucius kept the grave in mourning for three years; to achieve his dream, Confucius was ready to work as a cattle keeper or educate people on etiquettes, suffering all kinds of humiliations; frustrated in the State of Lu, Confucius went to the State of Qi, but he was persecuted by villains; after returning to the State of Lu, he found that the monarch was a mere figurehead among corrupted scholar-bureaucrats. When he served as minister of justice, he was even restrained by the scholar-bureaucrats from eliminating the power of the three capital-like towns of Three Woon families (Gwai Sun Si, Suk Sun Si and Meng Sun Si), so Confucius finally decided to tour the states with his disciples.
Pixiu and Lanhua became lifetime companions of Confucius.
Confucius did not know the secret between Lanhua and Pixiu. Lanhua’s advice turned out to be that Pixiu should depend on his own comprehension and actions. In the last days of Confucius, Lanhua told all the secrets of becoming a lucky animal, but Pixiu told Lanhua that he had understood “the last secret”. Pixiu was reluctant to embrace “success” when it was actually achieved because he hated leaving Confucius. He found all the disciples of Confucius reluctant to leave him. Confucius lived in the hearts of the living.
少年孔子在一次狩猎时救了贪吃顽皮的皮休，受伤的皮休经历了养伤、欲回山林、最终因兰花（同时被孔子所救）的提醒，为了得到孔子的帮助，使自己未来能走进民间，成为人们喜爱的吉祥兽，留在了孔子的身边。由此见证了孔子励志成才，设坛布教、为官从政，失意著书的人生经历。其间对未来成为吉祥兽的几次放弃，都因孔子的曲折人生，励志济世的故事所感动而留下来，比如：童年孔子一边放羊一边学习，性情淡泊，志向高远；他在母亲去世以后独自守墓三年，极尽孝道；为了理想甘愿做乘田小吏，或做四处奔波的相礼，受尽世间的屈辱……又如：在鲁国难以施展抱负，远赴齐国，却遭到小人迫害；返回鲁国后又看见士大夫腐败，国君架空；就连做了大司寇，想要清除叛乱隐患实施堕三都，也被士大夫们联手阻拦，最后不得不带着弟子们远离故土，周游列国……
留下来的皮休与兰花一同成为孔子一生的陪伴。
孔子并不知道兰花与皮休间的这个秘密，而兰花的忠告竟然是：一切靠皮休自我感悟与行动。夫子临终时，兰花告之了成为吉祥兽的全部秘密，皮休却对兰花说他已自悟到“最后的秘密”，在皮休“修成正果”时，反而不愿看到那一刻的到来，他怕失去孔子，而且他发现孔子的弟子也都不愿失去孔子，孔子活在了活着的人心里… …
