The story takes place in the beautiful coastal city-Xiamen. Mingyue and Mingliang live in a "combined family", therefore their relationship is in-and-out. Douya and Douding is sibling, due to their mother's confusion of their birth date, they are malcontent about it.

In order to be more harmonious, Mingliang agrees Mingyue mother's proposal. They are going to have a spring outing. But they take the wrong way and walk into the Tiger Mount. Fortunately they find a safe island, here they find "moonlit treasure box". When they open it, it is an ancient, elegant chessboard. There are many gears without chessman on it. It is an old strange watch. When they put on the watch, they become smaller and find themselves standing in the middle of the chessboard. Suddenly two fairies appear, saying they are the guarders of the chessboard. The blue one is called Kaka and the Red one is called Duoduo. Soon they become good friends. From fairies, little boys know that there is a big secret in this chessboard. Burning with curiosity, they keep asking fairies about it.

Fairies tell them the only way to reveal the mystery is to be the victor, conquering all the difficult obstacles in the chessboard. So, little boys start their chessboard adventure under the fairies' guidance. Then the chessboard becomes the virgin forest. There are lots of unexpected risks waiting for them.

Four little boys lost their way in the forest due to no adventurous experiences. Soon daybreak is coming. And then everything is going back like before. The fairies are gone and they turn back. The magic only works at night…….

Four little boys are found by their parents and go home safely. But they take the chessboard out of island with them. And it is Mingliang who keeps it temporarily. They decide to continue "The Magic Game"……

神奇的游戏》以鼓浪屿为背景，讲述4个小伙伴豆丁、豆芽、明月、明亮在精灵的帮助下，意外获得古木盒，进入原始森林经历一次次惊心动魄的冒险以及他们在现实生活中，通过不断的勇敢尝试和探索，逐渐成长的故事。整部动画片融入众多厦门元素--郑成功雕像、鼓浪屿沙滩等城市景观随处可见；片中人物个个都是厦门迷，他们爱吃鼓浪屿馅饼，学习高甲戏，热爱茶道，研究厦门民俗。

　　神奇的游戏该片以四个小伙伴在精灵的帮助下，意外获得古木盒，进入原始森林经历一次次惊心动魄的冒险为线索贯穿全文。通过原始森林中的冒险经历，他们发现了人类居住的现实环境被严重破坏的这一事实。同时他们在现实生活中也不断面对各种各样的难题：学习上的挫折、鬼脸王的挑战……孩子们通过不断地勇敢尝试和探索，渐渐成长了。他们重新认识自我，意识到自身的不足和缺点。在这过程中他们也体会到了亲情、友情的重要性，还有团队精神的可贵性，以及学习机会的来之不易。
