Japan stopped bombing Chongqing since a year ago. However, the nightmare of ‘Heavy bombs to Chongqing’ had impressed the people a lot and they can hardly forget it. Sores and distressed ruins are all over the eye. All of these recorded what the ‘Peidu’ had experienced in the seven years’ war against Japan.
The family of civil servant Wei Duanben lived in the crowded Chongqing as ‘Down River People’. Wei Duanben was a civil servant in Nanjing Government previously and withdrew to Chongqing by the car after the war broke. He had met a girl named Tian Peizhi who also lost the family in the war on the way. They had sympathy to each other because of war and then they fell in love and married, standing the disaster hand in hand. Then they were parents of two. The whole family shoved in a back house of a grocery, which was a typical ‘Hanging Bamboo Building’ in Chongqing at that time—it was established at the cliff. People got out from the top of it and could hardly saw the sunshine in the house for years.
Tian Peizhi was lovely by nature. She was like a child sometimes though she was mother of two. She also pursued the fashion like other modern females. The victory of the war was far, which was depressing. She cared little of the housework, addicting to gambling the words. She joined the first gamble in the house of her neighbour Tao Bosheng. Tao was a small businessman and had much money. His wife had persuaded him for many times but it didn’t work. Tian Peizhi gambled in small quantity, but she met Mrs. Hu when gambling.
Mrs. Hu was rich. She had much money and lived in a spacious house. She often invited some friends to kill time by playing cards. Sometimes there were only three people and they called Tian Peizhi to come. People gambled in large amount in her family. How can Tian Peizhi be satisfied with the poor ‘Salary from the Nation’ of Wei Duanben considering the vainglory in the casino? The couple quarrelled day by day. Wei Duanben failed very time. In fact there was an unsaid secret in his mind—He had a wife older than him for 3 years in the occupied hometown. He had hidden the truth from Tian Peizhi.
Tian Peizhi knew a successful man Fan Baohua in the gamble in Hu’s house. She started her distorted life from now on.
Wei Duanben brought a bag of official fund back and prepared to deliver it the next day. Tian Peizhi had lost all her money that day, longing to win back eagerly. Tian Peizhi lost money again. The forth wife of Mr. Zhu lent her some money to continue the play and she still couldn’t gain back. The debt was more and more. Zhu’s forth wife made a decision finally. She demanded Tian to be one of the ‘Pink Group’ member. They were to know the celebrities and get money from the rich men in the name of gambling.
Zhu’s forth wife was good at dancing prettily. Fan Baohua preferred contacting with them and took the official fund strategically. They would not be in trouble while the dull Wei Duanben was trapped. Wei’s superintend found the fund lost and began to search for it. The Director General and Section Chief of Wei decided to sacrifice Wei’s profits and charged him. Wei had no other choice and soaked in wine. Looking at the children, he enjoined Tian Peizhi to take care of them. It seemed he was to say goodbye forever miserably. Wei found his two lonely children in the village after he was out of the prison. He still longed to call back their mother. He taught them to sing the song of ‘Mother’ along the street, gaining some money and calling mother. Tian Peizhi had heard it but she couldn’t stop the addiction of gambling and hurried away.
The fog in the sky of Chongqing dropped away slowly and Jialing River ran silently, bringing many people’s pursuits of luxury and dissipation rich life away eternally.
