Guandong (Northeast China) includes 3 provinces of Liaoning, Jilin and Heilongjiang to the east of Shanhaiguan. Since the early days of Qing Dynasty to the times right before China was founded, due to natural disaster and warfare, bunches of poor people from North China went through all kinds of hardships in the way to Northeast China for livelihood. Among these emigrants, Shandong people accounted for a majority part, about 20 million joining the rush successively to the vast and abundant Northeast China. This uncommon large-scaled emigration phenomenon is hence called "Guandong Adventure" (Seeking a livelihood in the Northeast China).

The TV soap opera "Guandong Adventure" is a 52-part serial story about a Shandong family who was forced to leave their home and sought a livelihood in the Northeast China during the period of late Qing Dynasty and Nine Eighteen Break-out. Through the thread of the complex and frustrated destiny of Zhu Kaishan's family, this TV program tells the hardships and the setbacks among Zhu Kaishan and his 3 sons whose characters and destinies varied a lot from each other, and further reflects the past tragic history of "Guandong Adventure". It is composed of 4 segments: the first is about Venturing, Survival, Learning and Life; the second Home, Marriage, Resistance and Destiny; the third Competition, Revenge, Good and Evil, and Harmony; and the fourth Turmoil, Split, Righteousness and Life. It was a legendary enterprising development history of individual and group struggle; it was a history of joys and sorrows, partings and reunions; and it was even a history of praising the nation spirit through the story of a populace hero.
